In 2008, Chris established his award-winning architectural practice in Cape Town, South Africa. Initially called The Fold Architects, the firm later adopted his name in 2021, signalling a shift towards a more personal engagement with setting and constructed space.
Chris’ architectural philosophy is anchored in a nuanced understanding of the site’s particular qualities, as expressed in the plan’s corresponding interplay of mass, geometry, surface, and light. Rather than pursuing a single style across projects, this responsive approach asks how modest materials and straightforward structures might remain sympathetic to their surroundings and sensitive to the embodied experience of place.
Chris has since expanded his creative practice as co-founder and head designer of the furniture studio MŪVEK. This parallel project brings the refined sensibility of his architectural work to everyday objects, where formal rigour meets careful consideration of function.

Chris graduated cum laude with a B.Arch degree from the University of Pretoria in 2002 and received the South African Corobrik Award – the most sought-after architectural award at the student level – for his thesis project, Extraneousness. The work was included in the Royal Institute of British Architects' annual publication Visions for the Future the following year, and later featured in the book 10 Years + 100 Buildings: Architecture in a Democratic South Africa, edited by Prof. ’Ora Joubert (former Head of Architecture at the University of Pretoria), and published by Bell-Roberts in 2018.
In 2003, Chris was awarded a scholarship for the MSc (Arch) degree at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands, but chose instead to take up a position at Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects (EEA) in London as a Part II Architectural Assistant.
Returning to South Africa in 2004, he worked with several leading Cape Town firms, gaining experience in detailing high-end residential architecture and interiors. The practical knowledge and conceptual precision Chris acquired during this formative four-year period remain foundational to his multidisciplinary practice.
